The other day I was at the gym when I noticed something both unusual and amazing. As I was going through my strength and mobility routine, I noticed what appeared to be an octogenarian working out on one of the weight machines. He was putting maximum effort into his exercise which I thought was just fabulous. Upon finishing his set, he slowly stood and reached for his walker, that’s right he reached for his walker! He then slowly walked to the next machine, sat down and started a new set on a new machine. A minute or so later when finished at this machine he repeated the process again. This went on for around 30min as he methodically moved throughout the gym and did sets of exercises on all of the machines. After he finished, he again grabbed his walker, waved good bye to the front desk attendant and headed out.
My mindset as I drove to the gym that morning was one of self pity. I was sore from the previous day’s long run and not looking forward to the time I needed to spend on the stair climber. But as I watched the “Walker Man” leave the gym I realized that my mood and outlook had changed. I was inspired by the “Walker Man”. It was clear that moving was difficult for him. No one would have blamed him if he stayed at home and didn’t go to the gym. But no, the “Walker Man” is a Grinder! Even at his late stage in life and compromised physical state, he was as Teddy Roosevelt said “Do(ing) what you can, where you are with what you have.”
But as I watched the “Walker Man” leave the gym I realized that my mood and outlook had changed.
So when you are feeling sorry for yourself about the challenges you face and maybe taking for granted your abilities and gifts, remember the “Walker Man.” Pick yourself up, attack the challenge ahead and get after your task at hand. Not only will it be good for you but maybe, just maybe your work and effort will be an inspiration for others. Grinders Win, be a Grinder today!
