This morning during my run, I had a variety of thoughts zoom through my head.
Read more: BE BETTERAs I jogged along, I thought about how blessed I am that, at almost 58 years old, I am still able to go out and run 5-6 miles a few times a week, and do it pain-free. Sure, I run slower than I used to, and yes, I am a bit stiff the next day–but at least I can still do it.
I am lucky to have a group of friends who, despite their advancing age, continue to push themselves athletically to continue to, as one of them often says, “Be Better.” These friends don’t make excuses, they don’t complain, they just commit. They commit to the daily grind of working hard to “Be Better.”
Over the years, together we have done countless push-ups, logged thousands of miles, and endured a variety of workout challenges that we have created to test each other. It was not about competing with one another, but rather pushing each other to be our best selves. Grinders Win, but they don’t win alone. They win by surrounding themselves with people who help them become better.
Jerry Garvey, Ernie Torain, Ed Stewart, and Major John Bourgault USMC (ret)—thank you all for your help so far with my journey. I look forward to many, many more grueling workouts to come!
For the rest of you, in an increasingly divisive world filled with negativity and blame, what are you doing to inspire others and to instill in them the desire to “Be Better?”
